The dimensions of a pot determines the ideal capacity required for the plant. If you have a huge plant or even a small one, then the size should be based on it. The common knowledge says that the gallon capacity of a pot is based on the height of the container. Therefore if you want a big plant inside the container, you will need a bigger glass of water. A 24 inch pot can hold a lot of water if it is of good quality.
If you have a smaller plant, then the size of your container should be based on it. The common knowledge says that the cubic feet of soil holds almost the same quantity of water as the cubic feet of the cup of water. If you have a plant with large roots, then the cubic foot of soil will not be sufficient. Therefore if you are searching for containers for your plants, then you will see garden products recommended for specific sized pots.
Soil type is very important. Soils of different types hold water and nutrients differently. Soil like wet clay holds more water and nutrients than dry quarts. For small plants like herbs, dry quarts are the best. But for larger plants like trees, dry cu’s are suitable.
A 24 inch pot should be cleaned regularly. Remove any leaves and dirt from the root system. Cleaning the cu’s regularly will help them to grow properly. Make sure that the drainage holes in the bottom of the container are open and clean them well.
Watering is very important to the growth of the plants. Use a watering can or a sprinkler. For plants that have tall stems like dry quarts, it is better to use a hose pipe with a long spray head. Water the plants well after the first frost.
The water level of the water supply should be sufficient enough to cover the it’s completely. It is very important that the water drains well through the drainage holes in the bottom of the container. If the container has a tight soil, then using a garden hose will be easier. You should use water that is not too hot.
Soil preparation is another important step. If the container has clay, you can use a simple potting soil that contains natural nutrients and minerals. However, if the container is made of siltty or sandy soil, then you should use a rich soil such as composted bark, composted lawn grass, and wood chips. Most of the time, these soil types do not require much fertilizer. If there are a lot of weeds growing in your garden, then you can consider using weed killers. However, if you are just starting out, you do not need to use any weed killer at all.
After the proper soil preparation, you can now start working on the pots. For containers sizes up to 10 inches, we use low pressure sodium hydroxide potting soil that is easily available in the market. For container sizes greater than 10 inches, we prefer medium pressure potassium hydroxide soil that is available in the market. See garden products recommended for these larger pots.
You can now put the seed starting seed inside the potting soil. We do not recommend putting wet seeds in water. Wet seeds will need more water to germinate and sprout. Keep in mind that seed starting plants do not like to be planted in moist soil. Do you want to see your efforts of building a container garden be a failure?
Once you have completed preparing the container sizes, plant the seeds so that they will be able to grow roots deeply. Most seed starting plants do not like to be planted in soil that is too deep. If your container sizes are too deep, the roots will be at risk of being drowned.
If your container sizes are not large enough, you may choose to purchase a Thunderhead Potting Soil. Thunderhead potting soil is much more aerated than our low-pressure type. It also contains trace amounts of nutrients that help support the root system. It also comes in a wide array of attractive colors and some of the larger quantities of nutrient-rich compost that is required for plant nutrition.
