Planting basil plants is simple to do and they love the sunshine and warmth of your home. The first step is to find an area on your property that is free from any tall trees or buildings that might shade your plants. Once you decide on the spot then you will need to prepare the soil by removing the grass and sod from the area and then adding a half inch of bone meal to the soil. Once you have done that you should place the pots and plants in the holes and water them while they are growing.
It is important to remember that plant growing herbs like most other plants requires a great deal of care and attention. They like their nutrient rich soil and thrive off of it. You should water your plants about every two weeks during the summer months and less often in the winter months. During the springtime you can water your plants less but you should still water them daily during the summer months. In the fall and winter months you should provide your herb plants with about one inch of water per week, but only if the soil has not dried out completely.
When you are planting basil herb plants, you will also need to determine what size pots you want to use. Most people choose the six to twelve gallon size pots because these are more common and easier to find. Most herbs tend to bush out when they get a lot of sun or if they get a lot of moisture. If you plant the herbs in pots without providing any sort of structure, they will tend to stay upright and spread out. If you plant your plants in pots that are taller and have some sort of support for them they will stay nice and square.
When you buy basil for your herb container garden, you will need to know how much room each plant needs. This depends mostly on the type of herb you are growing. If you are growing basil and mint together then you need to provide them with about three to four inches of space between each plant. If you are growing other types of herbs then you may choose to go with a little less room. If you have a window box outside then you will need to provide your plants with at least two feet of distance from each other. The key to planting herbs is making sure they all get enough sun and water.
You will also need to plant basil in an area that gets a lot of sunlight. If you live in a desert region or a location where the soil is constantly dry, you will want to consider growing your herb container garden in a container that has shade. Different types of herbs will grow better in different areas so try to figure out where they will be best suited for your area.
